Tanzer 22 Projects
October 14, 1999
- bought the boat
- transferred ownership at Canada Customs
- installed new mast-holder brackets at pulpit and pushpit
- pressure-washed the deck
- took home most of the sailboat stuff
October 21, 1999
- delivered my Honda outboard to the dealer, to be tuned up + winterized
October 23, 1999
- winterized the boat
- added RV antifreeze to water tank and porta-potty
- removed the rest of the bits from the boat
- put mothballs in the cabin to ward off insects + mice
- measured the mast + companionway for future projects
- removed lifelines in preparation for winter canvas cover
October 25, 1999
- cleaned and waxed the boat
- wash and rinse the hull
- apply one coat of wax to the hull
- let dry, then buff
- apply a second coat of wax, and leave it on over the winter
- made a support for the tarp, stringing rope from the cabin-top
grabrails to the mast over the boat
- put on a huge blue poly tarp, and a canvas tarp over that
November 4, 1999
- received my battery charger (Guest 2610) and bilge pump (Rule 1500) from binnacle.com today
- hooked up the charger to the two Group 27 gel cells for maintenance
charge over the winter
November 6, 1999
- visited the boat to check on the tarp
- a few ounces of water had collected on the port cockpit seat
- added a few more tennis balls to the tarp ropes
- measured the cockpit locker covers, for temporary covers while I
rebuild the original ones (which are completely water-logged)
November 19, 1999
- picked up my Honda outboard from the dealer
- made an attachment for a dolly in the garage, to hang up the motor over
the winter.
December 11, 1999
- visited the boat with my brother, Camille
- general checkup -- everything looked OK
- a couple of photos, showing the tarp draped over the mast:
- also, some photos of the interior of the boat. These photos are all
taken with my (new) Kodak DC-200 digital camera.
December 17, 1999
- on the previous visit, I noticed the canvas tarp starting to rip at the
wooden transom mast support
- the fix was to sew a piece of heavy carpet under the canvas, at the
wear points.
- of course, this would have been impossible without using a proper sail
needle and sailmaker's palm
- some photos of the boat on the cradle, and a shot of the tennis balls I
used to hold down the blue tarp:
January 01, 2000
- another checkup... again, all's OK :-)
- took some more photos of the boat too, which will show up on the
other project pages
January 21, 2000
- bought a used Harken 2-speed mainsheet system at Genco
- it's a 2:1 / 4:1 system with dual hexaratchets
- the mainsheet was very frayed at the ends, so I put a whipping
on both ends, and also heat sealed the ends
- 5 minutes later, the heat-sealed part was already catching on things
- So... I sliced off the heat sealing, and will go with a straight
whipped end. I can live with a bit of fuzz.
- I also put an "insurance whipping" 3 inches from the end,
just in case the first whipping fails, the line won't completely unravel.
January 23, 2000
- It's winter outside :-)... inside work on the boat:
- replaced the mesh screen on the pop-top tent
- this required removing the threads on the entire top edge of the door
- the edges of the screen (and the velcro) were sewn with polyester
thread on my sewing machine
- sewing the screen back onto the tent was done with white whipping twine
(pre-waxed) and a sailmaker's palm
January 28, 2000
- more inside work: cabin cushions
- so far, I've sewn the port quarterberth. The top fabric is Dickson
acrylic (like Sunbrella), and the bottom is vinyl.
- I'm finding that the cushions require very careful measuring and
sewing -- they're easy to mess up!
January 31, 2000
- finished splicing six fender lines in 5/16" double-braid rope
- all eye splices done using Brion Toss' "splicing wand"
- cost: $15 for 50' of line, instead of $6 each for the lines,
pre-spliced (= $36)
February 5, 2000
- visited the boat again.
- determined why the dinette table doesn't sit flat -- it's untreated
plywood, and it warped :-(. To be replaced...
- measured the position of the gas-tank holding strap
- removed wooden slats from gas-tank locker for refinishing at home
- checked mast heel for mounting holes for vang and cunningham blocks
- gutted the wiring system -- a cleansing experience :-)
- removed the cockpit locker
covers for reconstruction at home
February 14-27, 2000
- cockpit-locker cover reconstruction, continued
March 4, 2000
- installed the re-done cockpit lockers
- removing the gasket required 2 hours of work by 2 people, working in
parallel with a pocket knife and a large quantity of acetone and
paper towels. Gummy, yucky, icky, and PITA were various adjectives that
could be applied to this process :-)
- test-fitted the traveler track -- it's a real shin-scraper across the
companionway.
- didn't remove the transom hardware -- that will require (1) a vacuum
cleaner to remove the spiders, and (2) more gusto and flexibility than I
had that day.
- looked at the sides of the mast, re: halyard exit gates. If the gates
are less than 1.5" wide, then flat gates will work OK.
March 8, 2000
- removed all the transom hardware, to re-finish the teak at home
- the swim ladder had backing plates installed, but the other hardware
didn't (rudder gudgeons and motor mount)
- see my transom page for before /
after photos
March 21, 2000
- completed a bunch of work on the boom, including installing an outhaul
exit block, and through-bolting the boom vang.
March 23, 2000
- reinstalled all the hardware on the transom, after cleaning and waxing
the transom
- Good: the transom teak had been maintained with Cetol.
- Bad: while the teak was still on the boat
- Ugly: without using any masking tape!
- reinstalled the teak in the gas-tank locker. Also cleaned & waxed the
locker. Here are the before/after photos:
March 26, 2000
- did a whole bunch of work on the mast:
- re-installed the spreader brackets (which were through-bolted!)
- removed the jib halyard lead block
- re-installed the upper shroud tangs
- removed the halyard cleats on the mast
- removed several bird's nests from inside the mast
- removed all the standing rigging
- found that my mast is bent (agh! what next!)
- removed the speed transducer mounting flange
- measured the battery box in preparation for installing a new Group 27
battery in place of the Group 24 that was there
- removed the old galley faucet (which was worth about what it sells for
new: cdn$20. It's being replaced with a centrifugal electric pump)
March 28, 2000
- Another visit to the boat: cleaned most of the crud off, and found a
leak from the rain (probably the rubrail, but maybe the genoa track)
- I'll try removing the interior trim strip to see if the deck joint is
visible from inside
- Also figured out where to mount the VHF near the companionway: hanging
from the bolts that I'll use to install the stbd rope clutch!
- vacuumed a bunch of stuff from inside the boat, and did a test-fitting
of the modified battery holder for the group 27 on stbd.
March 29, 2000
- Finished working on the wooden seat-covers for inside the boat.
They're all warped, so they got a coat of leftover Cetol instead of
S1 sealer. I'll do the sealer on their replacements (next winter)
- Picked up my new masthead today! It's designed for 5/8" sheaves, to
allow all-rope internal halyards. I've got 4 sheaves and 2 sails, so
there's room for expansion (topping lift, spinnaker, spare main halyard)
- Also picked up the metal plate for my new electrical panel, drilled to
my specs.
- Drilled the mounting holes for my replacement water inlet (photo soon),
and cleaned it and gave it a coat of wax.
March 31, 2000
- installed the new electrical panel, which involved cutting a hole in
the side of the galley
- scraped the plywood backing off the knotmeter thru-hull
- scraped the silicone off the water-tank inlet mounting
- removed two extra slats from the gas-tank locker, now the tank sits
properly!
April 1, 2000
- tested the depth-sounder at home (it works fine)
- tested the battery-level meter (which appears to be useless -- oh well)
- applied the first coat of varnish to the electrical-panel teak trim
- found out that my outboard motor hose is garbage -- the priming bulb is
cracked, so that's YET another thing to be replaced
- applied the second coat of varnish to the electrical-panel teak
- waxed the engine cowling
- glued the rubber surround on for the engine pull-cord on the cover,
using black sikaflex
- modified the teak for my new steaming light, and plugged the old
mounting holes with epoxy
April 2, 2000
- made a new backing plate for the speed transducer thru-hull
- applied first coat of cetol to steaming light teak, and third coat of
cetol to the flagstaff
- applied third coat of varnish to the electric-panel teak
April 3, 2000

April 4, 2000
- painted the bilge boards and battery box (light grey)
- modified the plastic outlet boxes so they'll fit in the existing spaces
on board

- attempted aluminum brazing to relocate the holes for the boom fittings
-- didn't work
- measured the fabric for my v-berth center cushion
- filled the holes in my clutch riser blocks with epoxy
April 7, 2000
- gave up on finding the 1-1/4" transom mount flagstaff socket, and
ground the end of the flagstaff down to 1"
- drilled the mounting holes for the clutch risers
- replaced the (green, mildewed, ugly) line on my life ring
- griped about the weather (SNOW tomorrow! Agh!)
April 8, 2000
- cetol'd the clutch riser blocks, flagstaff and steaming light teak
- sewed and assembled the v-berth center cushion
April 10, 2000
- finished the cabin cushions! yay!
April 12, 2000
- cleaned the sealant off the knotmeter thru-hull hole
- measured the cradle in preparation for taking it home on a friend's
boat trailer
- disassembled one of the Lewmar winches, to investigate moving the port
sheet winch. They're suprisingly simple in construction.
